accessible sex toys

When Tabitha Britt reached out to me for an article on My Sex Toy Guide entitled “Accessible Sex Toys for People With Disabilities, I was glad to provide some input. What follows is a brief synopsis of the article, with a link to the full article below.

Heather

Pleasure is a basic human need, but when it comes to catering to people with a disability or chronic illness, it may seem like the sex toy industry missed the mark. If you know where to look and what to look for, however, you’ll find that there are a number of affordable and accessible sex toys for people with disabilities just waiting to be enjoyed, over and over again.

As someone who deals with painful intercourse and a flaming urethra (symptoms of endometriosis and interstitial cystitis) on a regular basis, I’ve spent quite a bit of time researching and trying out different toys and lubes to see which ones are safe, effective, and work best for me and my needs.

In an effort to cut down your research time, I’ve compiled a list of the best accessible sex toys and accessories you can buy online. Although I have tried a few of the toys on this list, I haven’t had the chance to try all of them. So, to be as accurate and helpful as possible, I reached out to experts and others living with a disability and/or chronic illness for quotes and recommendations.

Fin Finger Vibrator, $85

Dame’s Fin finger vibrator is perfect for both solo and coupled play and comes with an optional tether for a better grip. You can wear Fin in a variety of ways—at the fingertips, near your palm,  or above or below your hand. It’s also water-resistant, USB-rechargeable, features three intensity levels, and comes in two calming colors (Jade or Navy).

For patients with difficulty holding a vibrator, the Fin by Dame is perfect,”

says Heather Jeffcoat, DPT, and author of Sex Without Pain: A Self-Treatment Guide to the Sex Life You Deserve.

A loop that goes around your fingers and grooves for your fingers to rest in makes this one of the most comfortable on the market.”

The best thing about this vibrator is that it “works the way you work.” So, there’s really no right or wrong way to use it. If you find that it’s slipping around, however, Dame’s website recommends holding it mid-finger or closer to your palm. Adding a little lube is another great way to kick things up a notch. Just remember: You cannot use silicone-based lube with silicone toys.

In Heather’s own words:

I thought it’s finally time to share one of my post-op recovery secrets — I’ve been loving that supported life in my @srchealth compression leggings since my hip labral repair surgery last October. When I wear them, my chronic left SI joint hurts less and my legs feel like they’re being micro-massaged all day long!
